Hirsutism

Hirsutism is excessive hair growth in women in areas of the body where men typically grow hair, such as the face, chest, and back. This abnormal hair growth is a result of elevated levels of androgens (male hormones) or an increased sensitivity of hair follicles to these hormones. Common causes include polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), adrenal disorders, and certain medications.

Drug-Induced Hair Growth

Certain medications can cause unwanted hair growth as a side effect in both men and women, by altering hormone levels or affecting hair follicles directly.

In women, drug-induced hair growth can present as increased hair density and coarseness in areas such as the face, arms, and back. This can be distressing, especially if the hair growth mimics male patterns.

In men, drug-induced hair growth usually results in enhanced body hair growth, with areas like the chest, back, and limbs becoming more densely covered. The condition is often reversible once the medication is discontinued.

Genetics

Genetic predisposition affects hair growth patterns and density in both men and women, influencing the amount and location of hair on the body.

In women, genetic factors can cause increased hair growth in areas such as the arms, legs, and face. Women from certain ethnic backgrounds may naturally have more body hair due to inherited traits.

In men, genetics play a role in determining body and facial hair density. Men who have a family history of heavy body hair are more prone to exhibit similar hair growth patterns, such as dense beards and abundant chest and back hair.

Treatment Options for Excessive and Unwanted Hair

A variety of treatments are available for excessive and unwanted hair, depending on the type and severity of the condition. These include hormonal treatments and procedural treatments performed in our office. Dr. Urquhart and Dr. Bonati will work with you to provide an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Waxing and electrolysis are common methods to remove unwanted hair and require regular maintenance. Laser hair removal can provide long term results and requires less maintenance.

Procedural Treatments

Laser Hair Removal uses concentrated light to target and destroy hair follicles, providing long-term hair reduction. It is often used for hirsutism and other unwanted hair growth conditions.
