Fractional laser resurfacing refers to a specific technology that delivers light energy to the skin in small tiny columns. Older lasers used to deliver light energy in one broad column to the skin. Utilizing numerous smaller columns accomplishes similar results with fewer complications compared to older lasers. Fractional laser resurfacing can be ablative or nonablative.
